Why early childhood development matters

The early-learning gap in Mpumalanga is real — but practical support helps

Available government and sector data shows that many young children in Mpumalanga still miss out on consistent early learning before Grade R. Love Africa Youth focuses on the practical foundations that make early childhood care possible: safe space, meals, carers, classrooms, toilets, kitchens and local accountability.

593,000children aged 0–5 were reported in Mpumalanga; 66%, about 391,000 children, were reported living below the poverty line.
131,984children were enrolled in Mpumalanga ECD programmes counted by the ECD Census — an estimated 31% enrolment-to-population ratio for children aged 3–5.

Vulinqondo Day Care Centre in Bambanani Village

Vulinqondo Day Care Centre — Bambanani Village

Vulinqondo is the long-running ECD centre Love Africa Youth has supported for years. It is a registered South African nonprofit organisation and currently cares for 39 children.

  • 39 children currently cared for.
  • 4 meals a day supporting nutrition and concentration.
  • 150+ children helped into early learning and school readiness over the years.
  • Current needs: compliant space, staffing support, management continuity and daily nutrition.

Nkanyezi Yokukhanya Day Care Centre — Mabuza

Nkanyezi is the new practical priority in Mabuza. Love Africa Youth has already supported food parcels and repairs, and is helping plan safer space and basic infrastructure.

  • 33 children currently recorded in source notes.
  • Three food parcels per month provided for more than a year.
  • Broken windows have been repaired.
  • Current needs include toilets, kitchen improvements and a safer learning space.

Current priority

Building a safer ECD space at Nkanyezi

We are using a practical staged plan for the new Nkanyezi site. The current working plan includes Classroom A, Classroom B, Classroom C, a kitchen, pantry and sickroom, with fencing treated separately.

The current rough material bill for the three building sections is about R66,782, with a 147.36m² usable floor area and 2,907 blocks after rough opening deductions. This excludes labour, delivery, plumbing, electrical and final adjustments. This figure is a working materials estimate and will be refined before purchases.
